Maximum Performance Training Workshops

Discipline Without Punishment

Dealing with discipline and other "people problems" is one of the toughest parts of any manager's job.  Obtaining and maintaining employee commitment is vital to an organization.  Work performance, job behavior and attendance must meet standards.  When those standards are not consistently met, the manager must have the tools and knowledge available to improve performance results.

Avoidance - The Usual Response                                                                                                                        Supervisors and managers often avoid taking disciplinary action, even when it is fully appropriate, because they believe that it creates more problems than it solves.  Also, since few managers have acquired the skills needed to conduct disciplinary discussions as a mature business transaction, they procrastinate, ignore the problem, or try to transfer the person.  Finally, when performance discrepancies become intolerable, and they cannot avoid the problems any longer, they act.  And the way they act makes things go from bad to worse: for the employee, the manager, the human resources department, and all too often, the legal department.

Organizations face terrible outcomes when discipline is poorly handled.  In addition to poor performance by the employee, entire departments can be adversely affected.

Effective Discipline is a Skill                                                                                                                              Exercising appropriate communication responses, methods, timing, and follow-up for personnel problems is a skill that can be learned, and must be practiced.  This one-day course teaches effective skills for handling disciplinary problems.
